Egied Van Broeckhovenschool laureate RES Awards

On February 20, the RES Awards 2024 were presented at the Antwerp Handelsbeurs. Organised by The Real Estate Society (RES), these Flemish architecture awards celebrate outstanding Belgian construction projects in three categories: best residential, (semi-)public, and commercial development. A jury of experts, including the master architects of Flanders, Brussels, and Ghent, led by Frederik Lesire, honorary chairman of RES, selected three winners from over forty submissions.

In the best (semi-)public development category, the award went to Egied Van Broeckhoven School Sint-Jans-Molenbeek, designed by B2Ai. Housed in the former Vandenheuvel brewery, the school opened in September 2024 and accommodates 860 students. Beyond education, it serves as a community hub, fostering collaboration with local organisations. Developed through the Flemish Government’s DBFM procedure, it is the first of forty planned school projects.

The jury praised the design for its positive influence on the neighborhood and its role as a catalyst for change.

“The jury recognises the school’s commitment to enhancing the entire community. Not only are the urban planning and architectural solutions highly valued, but this is also a remarkable social initiative in a challenging area of Molenbeek.”

Frederik Lesire, jury chairman
