Historic barracks to become vibrant neighbourhood
The team of B2Ai architects, a2o, awg architecten, Atelier Romain bv & Bureau Cnockaert is proud to announce that, together with Ciril & BROCAP, they have won the competition organised by WVI and Stad Damme for the regeneration of the former military barracks in Sijsele into the mixed-use neighbourhood ‘Kwartier 51’.
The team’s proposal builds on the area’s unique landscape, carefully blending the historical and functional qualities of the former site with thoughtful new interventions.
Within a few years, the 20.5-hectare site will be transformed into a vibrant neighbourhood, featuring 225 new homes, a youth center, and a hub for regional entrepreneurship – all embedded in a revitalised, climate-resilient environment.
