Inspired by the historical context of the old fortifications of the city of Ypres, the design of the swimming pool is a sequence of powerful volumes that translate the programme. The varying vertical profiling of the steel facade panels allows light and shadow to play freely. Much attention is paid to sustainability, accessibility, and the visitor experience. It is a classic example of urban sports development that primarily addressed specific needs without a long-term vision. Numerous buildings and sports infrastructures each come with their own car parks. The project for the new swimming pool starts from a future vision for the entire site. The swimming pool is seen as a starting point for organising the organically grown sports area.<\/p>\n<p>The master plan begins with opening up the site by relocating all centrally located car parks to the existing peripheral car parks. This makes it possible to create a low-traffic area where athletes, visitors, children, etc., can move around safely. Cars will no longer reign supreme on the site. The current central car park will be transformed into a central park area. The central square will be equipped with playground equipment, benches, rain gardens, etc. Meeting, sport and recreation are encouraged. To bring in sufficient daylight, the ground floor is equipped with long ribbon windows on all sides. Just like the fortifications, the facades are provided with a uniform facade material to emphasise their closed and massive character. The steel panels have varying vertical profiling. The glossy black finish gives the building extra depth through light and shadow effects.
